A garage is often the easiest room in the house to justify and the easiest one to get wrong. The space is right: good ceiling height in most builds, a clear footprint, no furniture to work around, and a floor that can take a subfloor without argument. What garages lack is conditioning. Every abandoned home simulator I've been called out to look at had the same story behind it. Great setup, unheated room, used enthusiastically until the first cold week, then not again.

Conditioning Comes Before Equipment

Budget for insulation and a heat source before you budget for a better launch monitor. That's not a sales position, it's the difference between a bay you use nine months a year and one you use twelve.

The list is short and predictable. Insulate the walls and the ceiling, because an uninsulated garage ceiling loses heat faster than anything else in the room. Seal the garage door, which is usually the single biggest air gap in the space, and consider an insulated door panel upgrade if the existing one is a thin steel skin. Add heat sized for the room rather than a plug in heater doing its best in the corner. In hot climates, reverse all of that and size cooling instead, because a west facing garage in summer is unusable for different reasons.

Done properly this is a normal renovation cost, not an exotic one, and it protects everything else you spend.

Field note. Seal the garage door before you buy a bigger heater. Most garage heat loss walks straight out around a door that was never meant to keep a room warm.

The Floor Is Not Level and That Matters

Almost every garage slab slopes toward the door for drainage. It's usually a quarter inch per foot, which does not sound like much until you understand that your hitting surface, your ball position and in some systems your launch monitor all assume level ground.

An unlevel hitting area produces readings that drift in one direction and a lie angle that isn't what you think it is. Golfers chase that for months, blaming their swing.

The fix is a levelled subfloor across the bay area, which you want anyway for shock absorption. We take slab levels during the survey, build the subfloor to correct the fall, and check the hitting surface with a level before we calibrate anything. It is a boring detail and it is the one that makes garage numbers trustworthy.

Keeping the Car, or Not

Plenty of our garage builds are dual use. A retractable screen, an enclosure that folds back against the wall, and a turf section that can be rolled or lifted lets a two car garage park one car and run a bay in the other half. It costs a little more in hardware and saves a lot in household negotiation.

Full conversions are simpler and better if you can spare the space. You get a permanently tensioned screen, which holds its shape and image geometry far better than a retractable one, plus somewhere to leave clubs, a mat and a seat without moving them every time.

Tell us which one you want at design stage. Converting a dual use build into a permanent one later means redoing the enclosure, and that's not a cheap change of mind.

The bottom line. A garage gives you the best space to swing in most homes and the worst conditions to swing in. Fix the envelope, level the floor, then buy the equipment. In that order.

Garages Questions

Can I still park a car in the garage with a simulator installed?

Yes, with a dual use build. Retractable screens, folding enclosures and liftable turf sections all exist for this. It costs more in hardware than a fixed install and the screen geometry is slightly less stable, but plenty of our customers run exactly this setup in a two car garage.

How do I heat a garage golf simulator?

Insulate first, then size a heat source to the finished room. Wall mounted units, mini splits and radiant options all work depending on the space and your climate. What does not work is an uninsulated garage with a portable heater. You will be fighting the building instead of warming it, and you will stop using the room.

Does the sloped garage floor cause problems?

It does if you ignore it. The slope affects your stance, your lie angle and the consistency of your readings. We level the bay area with a subfloor as part of the build, which also gives you the shock absorption you need over concrete. Both problems, one solution.

Is a garage too bright for a simulator screen?

It can be, especially with door glazing or side windows. Blackout treatment is cheaper and more effective than buying a brighter projector. We assess ambient light during the survey and spec the projector against the room you will actually have, not the room as it stands empty.
