Golf Simulators For Spare Bedrooms
The room everyone dismisses. A small warm bay twenty feet from your desk gets used more than a large cold one across the yard.
Spare bedrooms get written off early in most simulator conversations, usually because the owner has decided that anything short of a full driver bay is not worth doing. I'd push back on that. Usage beats capability. A conditioned room inside the house, available for twenty minutes between meetings, will collect more practice hours in a year than a bigger bay in an unheated garage. And the shots you can genuinely work on in a small room are the ones that lower scores fastest.

Be Honest About What Fits
Most spare bedrooms will not support a free driver swing. Some will, if the ceiling is high and the room is long, but plan on the assumption that yours will not and treat it as a bonus if it does.
What a small room does support is substantial. Full wedge and short iron swings in many cases. Chipping and pitching with real carry data. Putting on a proper surface with roll measurement. Gapping work for your scoring clubs, which is where most amateurs have the largest unknowns. And swing work with a shortened club or slower speed drills, which has real transfer.
We measure the room and tell you which of those the space actually supports before you buy anything. If it turns out you can swing a driver, that's a good day. If not, the build is still worth doing.
Field note. The standard throw projector in a small room is the error we correct most often. Check the throw distance against your actual room depth before anything is ordered.
Specifying a Small Room Properly
Small rooms punish bad component choices harder than large ones.
Projection is the first problem. A standard throw projector needs distance you do not have, so short throw or ultra short throw is usually the answer, mounted carefully to avoid shadowing the golfer. This is the single most common spec error in small room builds.
Launch monitor placement is the second. Overhead units need height, and units that sit behind the ball need depth behind the hitting position. In a tight room, side mounted or short range capable units solve it. Getting this wrong means a system that cannot read the ball from where it physically fits.
Ball containment is the third, and it needs to be better than a large room, not worse. Walls are close. Netting, side barriers and a properly tensioned screen all matter more here.

The Case for the Small Bay
There's a strategic argument for this build that goes beyond making do.
Most amateur golfers have no idea what their wedges actually carry. Not roughly. Precisely, at three different swing lengths. That gap costs more strokes than driver distance does, and it is exactly what a small room lets you fix. Twenty minutes of gapping work with real numbers, repeated through the winter, changes how you play approach shots.
Putting is the same story. Almost nobody practises it with measurement, and a spare room with a quality putting surface and roll data is a genuinely serious training tool.
So yes, this is a compromise on capability. It is not a compromise on improvement, and for a lot of golfers it is the better investment.
The bottom line. A spare bedroom bay trades driver capability for usage and for scoring practice. For a lot of golfers that is the trade that actually lowers a handicap.

Can I swing a driver in a spare bedroom?
Sometimes, and you should not count on it. Ceiling height and room length both have to cooperate. We measure the swing arc against the actual room rather than using a general rule, and we tell you before you buy. Many spare room builds are specified around wedges, short irons and short game instead, which is a legitimate design rather than a fallback.
What launch monitor works in a small room?
Ones that do not need long ball flight or high overhead mounting. Side mounted units and short range capable systems are the usual answers. The wrong choice here is a unit that physically fits the room but cannot read the ball from the position the room allows, which is a frustrating and expensive discovery.
Is a small simulator worth the money?
It depends what you want from it. If the goal is driver distance and virtual rounds, a small room will disappoint you. If the goal is knowing your wedge carries precisely and putting with real feedback, it is one of the highest return practice setups you can own, largely because you will actually use it.
Will it damage the room?
Not with proper containment. The risks are ball strikes on walls and ceilings, and turf wear on the floor beneath. Both are handled at design stage with netting, side barriers and a subfloor. Small rooms need more containment than large ones, not less, and we spec accordingly.
