How To Actually Score Well

Three things decide your score, and only one of them is the swing meter. Club selection comes first. The yardage under each club updates with the elevation you pick, so read it before you swing rather than defaulting to driver. Overswinging is punished on purpose: the power bar keeps climbing past the mark, and pushing past it costs you distance the same way it does in real life.

The accuracy meter is where the points live. Dead centre starts the ball on line with no curve. Miss it and you get two penalties at once, because the face angle sends the ball offline and the tilted spin axis curves it further the same way. That is why a small miss looks fine at first and finishes forty feet from the pin.

The Physics Under It

Ball flight here is not a canned animation. Every shot integrates gravity, aerodynamic drag and Magnus lift from backspin, stepping forward two milliseconds at a time until the ball meets the ground. Drag and lift both scale with the spin ratio, which is why a wedge climbs steeply and drops short while a driver flattens out and runs.

Air density comes from the standard barometric approximation, so elevation feeds straight into the drag term. Swing the same driver in Boston at 141 feet and again in Denver at 5,280 and the model gives you about five percent more carry, roughly twelve yards.

Worth being straight about something. The common rule of thumb is two percent more carry per thousand feet, which would predict closer to eleven percent at Denver. This model is more conservative because thinner air cuts the lift holding the ball up as well as the drag slowing it down, and those two partly cancel. The rule of thumb is a useful shortcut for setting a simulator's altitude field. It is not physics, and the gap between the two is exactly the sort of thing a real launch monitor settles for your swing rather than an average one.
