    How The Tool Decides

    Most room calculators ask for your dimensions and compare them to one fixed minimum. That is why they tell a 5 ft 4 golfer and a 6 ft 5 golfer the same thing. The constraint is not the room on its own, it is the room against the person swinging in it.

    So this asks your height first. At the top of the backswing the clubhead sits roughly a driver length above your trail shoulder, which across the industry works out near your height plus 42 inches for a free driver swing, and around your height plus 30 for irons and wedges. A 6 ft golfer therefore wants about 9 ft 6, and a 5 ft 6 golfer is fine at about 9 ft. Same room, different answers.

    Width Is About The Club, Not The Ball

    Width is the measurement people get wrong most often, because they picture the ball rather than the arc. The club travels well outside your body through impact and follow through, and it keeps travelling after the ball has gone. The plan view above draws that arc to scale so you can see it rather than take our word for it.

    A household with a left and a right handed player needs more again, because the swing side changes. That is why the handedness question is there.

    What The Specification Means

    The launch monitor recommendation follows from what your room can physically mount. Overhead units need the height. Side mounted units need the width. Units that sit behind the ball need the depth. When a room is tight in all three, a floor or short range unit reading from beside the ball is the honest answer.

    The projector recommendation is throw ratio arithmetic: distance from the lens to the screen divided by the image width. Under about one to one a standard projector cannot fill the screen, and under about half you also start shadowing the golfer, which is where ultra short throw earns its cost.

    What This Tool Will Not Do

    It will not price your build, because the two things that move the number most are the launch monitor you choose and whatever your room needs before the bay goes in. Neither is knowable from four measurements.

    It also cannot see the duct that crosses your swing path, the slab that falls a quarter inch per foot toward the garage door, or the circuit that already carries half the house. That is what the survey is for, and it is free.

    How much ceiling height do I need for a golf simulator?

    It depends on your height, which is why this tool asks. At the top of the backswing the clubhead sits roughly a driver length above your trail shoulder, which works out near your height plus 42 inches for a free driver swing and about your height plus 30 for irons. A 6 ft golfer wants roughly 9 ft 6. Measure at the lowest duct, beam or light fixture in the swing path rather than the middle of the room.

    What if my room is too short for a driver?

    It is not the end of the project. Plenty of the bays we build are specified around irons, wedges and short game, with a shortened driver setup for golfers who want one. The tool tells you which category you are in rather than just failing you, because a well used iron bay beats an unused driver bay.

    Why does the tool ask about handedness?

    Because the swing side changes. A household with both a left and a right handed player needs usable width on both sides of the ball, which pushes the comfortable width up by a couple of feet. It is a common thing to forget until the bay is built.

    Is this as good as a real survey?

    No, and it is not meant to be. Four numbers cannot see the duct crossing your swing path, the garage slab that falls toward the door, the ambient light, or which circuits reach the room. What the tool does is tell you quickly whether the space is worth surveying at all, and what the likely shape of the build is.

    Does it tell me what a simulator will cost?

    Deliberately not. The two things that move the price most are which launch monitor you choose and what your room needs before the bay goes in, and neither is knowable from dimensions alone. Send the results through and we will price your actual room instead of a range.

    Can I use metric measurements?

    Yes. The toggle at the top of the controls switches the whole tool between feet and inches and metres, and it converts whatever you have already entered rather than clearing it.
