Every other room in this section comes with constraints you inherited. A shed or purpose built outbuilding is the one case where you get to choose the ceiling height, the footprint, the insulation, the power and the light before a single club is swung. That is a genuine advantage and it's why this is quietly the best outcome for anyone with the yard for it. It's also the option most homeowners never consider, because a golf simulator building sounds more exotic than it is.

Design the Envelope Around the Swing

Start with clearance and work outward. Set the interior height so a driver swings freely with margin, which removes the single biggest compromise in home simulator builds. Set the width so the club has room through impact and follow through on both sides, and add more if anyone in the house plays left handed. Set the depth for the screen, your swing and a seating area behind it, because a bay with nowhere to sit gets used for shorter sessions.

Then insulate properly while the walls are open. It costs almost nothing extra at build stage and it is expensive to retrofit. Run the power you'll actually need, including dedicated circuits, rather than one spur from the house that trips when the projector and a heater run together.

This is the one build where nothing has to be a compromise. Take advantage of it.

Field note. Measure your interior dimensions after insulation goes in. Losing four inches per wall to insulation is normal and it has ended more than one build that was planned on the outside dimensions.

Existing Sheds and What They Can Take

Not everyone is building new. Plenty of existing outbuildings work, and the assessment runs in a specific order.

Structure first. Can the frame carry an enclosure and screen frame, and is the floor solid and level enough to build on. Timber floors over joists often need reinforcement under the hitting area.

Height second, measured the same way as a basement, at the lowest obstruction including any collar ties or roof structure crossing the space.

Then envelope. Most garden buildings are single skin and effectively unheatable as they stand. Insulating the walls and roof internally costs you interior dimensions, so measure after insulation, not before.

Finally power and damp. A building with no ground moisture barrier will destroy electronics slowly and turf faster.

Why Detached Beats Attached for Noise

Ball impact is loud and it travels. In a house, that noise goes through the floor structure into whatever room is above, which is the main complaint we get about basement bays under bedrooms. A detached building removes that problem completely.

It also removes the mess. Turf sheds fibres, clubs bring in dirt, and a bay in constant use is not a tidy room. Keeping it out of the house is worth more than people expect.

The trade is the walk. In cold or wet climates a bay you have to cross the yard to reach gets used less than one down the stairs, so a lit path and a properly heated building matter more here than anywhere else. Get those right and detached is the best of every option.

The bottom line. If you have the yard, an outbuilding is the only home simulator option with no inherited compromise. Design the height first, insulate at build stage, and keep the noise and mess out of the house.

Do I need planning permission or a permit for a golf simulator shed?

Requirements vary by municipality and by the size and use of the structure, so check with your local building department before you design. Power runs to an outbuilding are typically permitted work. We can tell you what the build involves technically, but the permit question is a local one and worth answering early.

Can an existing garden shed take a simulator?

Sometimes. The assessment covers structure, floor, height at the lowest point including roof members, and whether the envelope can be insulated and heated. Single skin garden buildings almost always need internal insulation, and that reduces your interior dimensions, so measure the finished space rather than the current one.

How do I run power to an outbuilding?

A properly rated supply from the house consumer unit, installed by a licensed electrician, with enough capacity for projector, computer, launch monitor, lighting and heating running together. A single extension lead is not a solution. We specify the load at design stage so your electrician sizes it correctly.

Is a detached building harder to keep warm?

Only if it is poorly insulated. A well insulated outbuilding with a correctly sized heater holds temperature fine, and it heats faster than a basement because the volume is smaller. Insulation at build stage is what makes this work, and it is the item most people underspend on.
